He was apprenticed to Messrs Scholefield Thomas Jacques Somerscales (born in Sculcoates, Yorkshire on 29 October ; died in Sculcoates, Yorkshire on 27 June ) was an English teacher, sailor, and landscape and marine painter. He is also considered a Chilean painter as he began his career as an artist there.
Thomas Jacques Somerscales. (British, 1842-1927) The nineteenth-century British painter Thomas Jacques Somerscales began his career not as an artist but as a naval teacher at sea. However a severe bout with malaria forced him to abandon the sea and move to Chile in where he secured a teaching position at the prestigious MacKay Academy.
